Wisdom
tooth extractions are usually done in a single visit. The mouth is
numbed completely before the procedure to minimize any discomfort.
Stitches are usually placed to allow quicker, thorough healing.

Extraction
of wisdom teeth is usually necessary when the jaw is not large enough to
accommodate them so that they become impacted (do not erupt or only
partially erupt.) Sometimes wisdom teeth grow in sideways or stay
trapped in the gum and bone. This can allow bacteria to travel inside
the gums and cause an infection or a cyst to develop and grow. The
infection and cyst can in turn damage and destroy the jawbone. If the
teeth come in poorly positioned or not in alignment with the other
teeth, they can damage the adjacent teeth and will need to be removed.
